High Impact Philanthropy
Woodleigh Impact is a charitable foundation, committed to funding the most impactful organisations. Our priority cause area is the alleviation and prevention of poverty in very low income countries and have taken the strategic decision to focus for now on one country - Sierra Leone. In addition, we continue to be interested in the prevention of climate and environmental breakdown by supporting emerging social movements and we fund UK based organisations on an ad hoc basis.
We aim to support small to medium-sized organisations with strong leadership and deep community connections. We don't have an application process and don’t accept unsolicited requests; instead, we carry out our own research and use our own network to identify organisations that may be suitable for our funding. We are also happy to support new initiatives and carry out our own research to identify promising interventions with the potential for high and sustainable impact with a view to helping people or existing organisations to launch them.
The organisations we support will typically be either grass-roots or founder-led. We prefer to support organisations that have laser focus and excellent implementation credentials. number of very effective things well. They will be able to clearly explain the problem(s) they seek to address, know why their solution is the best one, measure as much as they can and produce evidence for their theory of change. We like funding work which is neglected by other funders and are also willing to fund activities which are highly ambitious but have an extraordinarily high impact if they come off.
Woodleigh Impact was established by the Clarke family in 2021. As a guide, most of our grants are in the range £5,000 to £10,000 and we fund around a dozen organisations each year. In addition, we allocate larger sums for particularly strong teams with genuinely scalable activities.

At the end of each calendar year, we review our performance for that year including what went well and what didn’t and we then set out grantmaking strategy for the following year.
Since early 2025 we have focused our global development work almost exclusively on Sierra Leone. This is because we believe that having a strong geographic focus means we are better informed and can form deeper relationships with our partners who we visit each year.
